Trattoria Gallo D'Oro (The Golden Rooster) is a delightful find along the Singapore River, where you expect more bars and pubs than home-style Italian cuisine. Chef Carlo, head chef and co-owner, is eager for diners to experience the same warmth reminiscent of his family meals back in Bergamo, Italy.
From the minute you step into the restaurant, you experience this inviting ambience through the sunny yellow interior and red brick tiles that usher you to bask in a cosy, comfy setting. Team Chope loves sharing awesome eats, and we were so thrilled when we discovered that Trattoria Gallo D'Oro offers a daily 'sharing menu' with a sample of different appetizers, pastas, meat options and even desserts! Even their a la carte menu items are prepared for sharing and placed in the middle of the table.
For those not willing to share (we know where you are coming from), Chef Carlo brings from his hometown of Bergamo a wonderful Italian staple, the Casonsei alla Bergamasca. Expect to be swept off your feet by the veal half moon pasta drizzled with golden butter and crispy bacon chips.
In our minds, good Italian food goes perfectly a good wine. And if you’ve got some to spare, bring it along! The restaurant is happy to waive corkage charges as long as a bottle of their extensive collection of over 50 in-house wines is selected during your meal. "Trattoria Gallo d’Oro is the first restaurant by co-owner and head chef Carlo Marengoni, most recently of the Marina Mandarin Hotel. Tucked in the sterile concrete streets around Central Mall, chef Marengoni cooks up northern Italian dishes from his hometown of Bergamo, Italy. The decor of this neatly packed 30-seater is simple: dark wood furniture, terracotta floor, shelves of wine bottles, outcroppings of exposed faux brick and mirrored wall panels. There’s a windowed kitchen, too, where you can sit and watch the chefs at work.
Chef Marengoni’s food is served in rustic, shallow casserole-style plates, and the concept is ‘have food, must share’. He offers a limited sharing menu of the day ($58 per person), but even the à la carte dishes are served one by one and put in the centre of the table."
