    Description

    If ever there were an ingredient to whom a whole restaurant should be dedicated, creamy dreamy mozzarella would be a top contender. As such, it's no wonder that this Duxton Hill trattoria has been charming local diners and cheese lovers since the get-go.

    Cheese addicts all have their drug of choice - cheddar, parmesan, perhaps even a wayward goat, but none reign as universally appealing, gaining the popular vote by far, as mozzarella. With an enviably fresh range of the luscious pulled cheese available daily, it may come as a shock then that Latteria is a no pizza zone. Indeed, Latteria evades the most obvious vehicle for mozz and instead offers purist platters of the cheese for the antipasti course, and inventive renditions of Italian fare for the mains.

    Consider for example the Beef Sirloin Tagliata, with thinly sliced and well-cooked beef harbouring waves of Tuscan flavour, or the Stracciatella Bottarga, shredded curls of milky mozzarella paired with peppery rocket and zucchini. It's enough to break the hearts of many a lactose intolerant, but even then there is a merciful array of Italian focused dishes like the Grilled Whole Seabass that are equal-opportunity satisfiers.

    The vibe at Latteria is anything but cheesy. Posted upon Duxton Hill, it plays up the heritage trimmings like the painted tiles and romantic, shaded portico to suit its Italian theme. The dining room is a lovely hodge podge of bistro chairs and rustic family style furnishings, though the best seats in the house are actually outside of the house altogether.     "Occupying the short-lived bar/restaurant's semi-alfresco 90-seat space, the family-friendly Latteria ('dairy bar') serves up plates of Italian-sourced, fresh semi-soft cheese that comes shredded (stracciatella), knotted (nodini pugliesi), plaited (treccia) and rolled (sfoglia). Each is served with contrasting sides ($20-$30) like the sultry and sweet fig vincotto sauce, briny bottarga and confit tomatoes. It's not all about the raw dairy - the porcini and burrata (cow milk mozzarella with a creamy centre) pasta bake ($25), and truffle and affumicata (smoked mozzarella) risotto ($25), lead the main courses.

    Just as The Jackson Plan refrained from serving fish and chips, Il Lido's new Italian incarnation - yes, the owners remain - will not be serving its most expected item: pizza. Instead, push your tines into plates of grilled beef sirloin tagliata (cut into strips) with rocket and parmigiano cheese ($35), and grilled whole seabass, Amalfi-style ($35).
