JPOT is a trailblazer in the local food scene by redefining a much-loved dining tradition, hotpot (or steamboat as some of you may affectionately refer to it as). By using smaller individual pots rather than a large communal pot and introducing a range of new soup base flavours such as Fish Head and Bak Kut Teh, JPOT has breathed new life into this dining concept. Judging by the crowds that throng there throughout the day, it certainly looks like they’ve found a winning formula (and one that you really should make a reservation for)!
When you first enter JPOT, you're reminded that this is no ordinary hotpot restaurant as tanks of live seafood allude to the fact that JPOT is operated by the Jumbo Group with its reputation for excellent seafood. A little further on, you’re immediately greeted by the warm aroma of the various pots stewing away at each table as well as the excited chatter from the other diners. Part of the fun of hotpot is the interactive nature of the experience and the chance to cook the food yourself. Want your vegetables lightly blanched or cooked through? Want your noodles firmer or softer? At JPOT, you're in complete control.
From the flavour of the broth, to the wide variety of dishes on offer, to the condiment bar, it's all about creating a personalised dining experience to suit your taste and your mood (May 2012)
"So now is the right time to have a feast there. To me, they were the best hotpots I've had. They surpassed my expectation and surprised me with new dimensions and depths of flavour. Singapore steamboat or hotpot will never be the same again." -SoShiok.com
"This waterside outfit is true blue Singaporean hotpot given a chic, mod spin." -8 Days
We love the fact that each person at the table can choose separate flavours of broth for themselves. With 7 different broth flavours to choose from, we were really spoiled for choice. Those who prefer a spicier broth could choose between the Laksa or Tom Yum while others could opt for a more traditional JPOT Superior Broth or Herbal. Needless to say, we made sure we brought enough people to order one of each broth so that we could try them all! What really caught our attention though, was the Bak Kut Teh broth with its rich peppery and meaty flavour. A little-known fact is that the famous Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh is also part of the Jumbo Group and the fragrant aroma of the broth here almost certainly has something to do with that.
For those of you who can't decide or are new to the whole concept, we highly recommend choosing the set menus as they are a great introduction if you haven't been here before and great value to those more initiated. With a wide variety of live seafood, premium meats and fresh vegetables sourced from the same high quality purveyors that supply the rest of the Jumbo Group, you can be assured of the same outstanding quality at reasonable prices that have made the Jumbo Group a household name in Singapore.
There aren't many places where you can enjoy your Yong Tau Foo favourites alongside premium slices of Kurobuta Pork and Wagyu Beef. One of the unique items on the menu that instantly grabbed our attention was the Fish Noodles which are essentially fish paste in a small piping bag that you can squeeze to create your own "noodles". Great fun, and delicious too!
We've got a confession to make. One of our guilty pleasures is making our own customized dipping sauces from the over 10 different ingredients on offer ranging from fried and fresh garlic to chilli padi, sha cha to springs onions, sesame oil to soy sauce. The combination possibilities here are pretty much infinite and are a great way to personalise your dining experience to suit your tastes perfectly. JPOT is definitely a place we'll be back to again and again (it may have something to do with wanting to continue experimenting with various dipping sauce recipes)! (May 2012)
