Tucked off to the side of the hotel's lobby, and impeccably dressed in its cushioned chairs and wood paneling stands Conrad Centennial's Lobby Lounge - an oasis of old world charm, sophistication, and delicious food. On weekdays, they offer an afternoon tea set that includes a selection of sandwiches, pastries and sweets. The range of delicacies include mini-smoked salmon bagels with cream cheese and capers, aged cheddar sandwiches with pickled onions, green tea mousse biscotti, and freshly baked soufflés, all served alongside an endless flow of coffee and tea.
On weekends though, is when the space explodes into seemingly endless lines of food, with buffet counters for sushi, hot pastries, desserts, fresh fruit, dim sum; an overwhelming smorgasbord of tastiness! Much like their other buffet at Oscar's, the Lobby Lounge's weekend 'Afternoon Delight' delivers quantity, AND quality.
Also, if the buffet spread somehow wasn't enough, it also includes a refillable three-tiered stand with all your classic sandwiches, and scones that are served separately. Now, if you've never understood the fuss behind cucumber sandwiches, then you definitely need to pay a visit to the Lobby Lounge. The ones here are light, refreshing, yet deliciously simple. They were so good, we asked for three rounds of those tasty little devils!
Afternoon tea is, was, and always will be one of the best ways to indulge yourself. And at the Lobby Lounge, they wouldn't have it any other way. (May 2013)
Ironically, what many restaurants that serve afternoon tea oft overlook is, the tea. We love that the Lobby Lounge serves Ronnefeldt tea. A premium German tea brand, the Lobby Lounge carries the entire range, from their refreshing peppermint to their timeless Earl Grey. For those looking for something a little lighter, there's also infusions such as their rooibos vanilla.
Our most recent discovery though? The 'Morgentau', or Morning Dew. Green Sencha tea leaves are perfumed with lemon and mango, for a light, citrusy tea that's appetisingly fragrant, yet not tart in the least. We were also impressed by their fascinating "sleeping tea pots". They arrive lying down, allowing the tea leaves to steep, and then stand either at 45 degrees or at 90 degrees, depending on how much stronger your want your tea to get while you're working on that first cup.
What would tea be though, without the food on offer? And we have nothing but praise for what we had at the Lobby Lounge. The smoked salmon bagel came with cream cheese, but the smoked salmon canapes on the buffet line came with creamed horseradish. Which one did we love more? We're not quite sure! We did love the contrast and variety of having both, and the fact that the salmon was of top notch quality didn't hurt either.
We were also head over heels in love with the chocolate chip scone. What we initially dismissed as a 'boring' raisin scone turned out to be a deliciously chocolatey treat that still went well with the clotted cream and strawberry sauce. And we haven't even gone on about the the hot food items, like the puff pastry topped beef stew cups that were a savoury wonder, or the buttery crumbly char siew soh (or roasted pork puff, for the uninitiated) that left our palates aching for more!
Here at Team Chope, we've eaten our way through many an afternoon tea, so trust us when we say that what the Lobby Lounge at the Conrad Centennial does is truly worth the visit. And if you're going on a weekend? Make sure to give lunch a miss. (May 2013)
