You can hardly find a place where professionals, tourists, and those from the creative industry gather. Until you’ve found Breeze that is. This rooftop-dining concept atop Ann Siang hill is strategically situated near the CBD, so professionals who don’t want to hang out too near their office after work are drawn to it, yet it’s also so close to Tanjong Pagar and Chinatown that the crowd is a healthy mix of locals, expats, and tourists alike.
Location aside, there’s plenty that makes us want to patronise Breeze. Heck we’d go halfway across the country for just the view alone! Admire the eclectic mix of red-tiled shophouse roofs and CBD skyscrapers against a backdrop of the orange and pink of the setting sun as you sip on your glass of Breeze’s signature mojito. Breeze is aptly named as much for the breeziness of the dining area – they certainly don’t stinge on the fans when the weather is warmer! – as for the ease of dining. It’s a casual experience that encourages diners to share their food.
If you know Team Chope well enough, you’ll understand sharing doesn’t come naturally to us. Luckily, the hearty portions make us want to share so we have room to try everything. Be sure to try the Breeze Platter, with its tuna and avocado bruschetta, grilled Portobello mushroom with cheese and bacon crisps, mixed berry salad with tropical fruit dressing and the highlight: lemongrass mussels cooked in spicy coconut gravy. Also consider sharing the Grilled Platter! It’s got so much food that we don’t doubt you’d be able to feed 3 or 4 even though the restaurant recommends it for 2! (Jul 2012)
The Rack of Lamb alone had us raving for days. It’s one of those items on the menu that remind you of how you shouldn’t always stick to chef recommendations, because a good restaurant does everything on its menu well. There’s no hint of that strong smell of mutton because Breeze grills the rack with mustard seeds, rosemary until the meat falls clean off the bone with a gentle nudge. Served with generous sides of broccoli, sweet carrots and corn on the cob and a dish of mint apricot relish, you can be sure it won’t disappoint.
The Moroccan Beef Skewers is also another main to watch out for. Huge chunks of tender beef well marinated with lemongrass and garam masala are nicely grilled to perfection and served with bell peppers and Madeira sauce. We’d recommend you try the skewers without the sauce too – it’s definitely good enough to hold the fort on its own.
Ask the wait staff for the bar menu if you’re looking for light bites to go with drinks. The Oriental Chicken Wings comes with Thai sweet and sour chilli sauce that contrasts beautifully with the refreshing mint of the mojito. Not a fan of cocktails? Breeze offers a wide selection of beers, wines and champagnes too, so there’s always something for everyone.
Above all, go for the ambience. Overlooking the quiet charm of Ann Siang Hill, it’s the perfect place to shoot the breeze. (Jul 2012)
